When one of our children was born with several unexpected problems, Dr Markiewicz immediately came across to a hospital he doesn’t practice at and gave us both advice and a great deal of support at a time we were in crisis. Furthermore, he arranged for the leading Paediatric Cardiologist (who also doesn’t normally work at the hospital) to visit us the following day and conduct a complete and thorough examination. As one of our children has disabilities, Dr Markiewicz has supported us wholeheartedly through both good and bad times, recording our child’s progress in a thorough manner so that experts have taken us very seriously when investigating any deterioration. He a quality that can be rare in doctors – an open mind – and is happy to investigate new areas of research that might help a sick child and point us in the right direction: through Dr Markiewicz we have gained access to a host of specialists in paediatric care that we have needed on many occasions.
Dr Markiewicz is undoubtedly an amazing diagnostician. For example, on one occasion I texted him a picture of my toddler’s eye as we were in the English countryside. The local GP had told us to go to A&E, but when we arrived at the local hospital the A&E team told us to come back in a few days if things got a lot worse. Dr Markiewicz spoke to the A&E doctor (who wasn’t a paediatrician) at length and explained that our daughter needed to be on an IV drip immediately, otherwise her eyesight was seriously at risk (and, as we later found out, that she was at risk of infectious meningitis from the illness). Eventually, he asked to speak to us and told us to leave the hospital and drive back to London, where he would have a room and medication waiting for us (this was on New Year’s Eve). We arrived a few hours later to find doctors and nurses waiting for us: they were shocked that she had not been treated immediately. Subsequently, Dr Markiewicz came to see her daily and monitored her progress.
I would add that this dedication and support extends to all our children: he has helped us navigate the typical and atypical childhood hurdles with a great deal of care and attention."
